Caring for your e-bike during winter

With only a few more weeks of winter ahead of us, you may be thinking about pulling out your e-bike.

With winter conditions still possible in March, we reached out to Yves at Cyclesmith to share some tips for taking care of your e-bike in winter.

Battery health

One of the first things to consider is battery health. To get the most out of your e-bike, you want to ensure your battery isn’t exposed to extreme temperatures, as both heat and cold can affect your battery health. When storing your battery, aim to keep it around 60-80% charged. However, before heading out for a ride, charging it to 100% is a good idea to maximize your range.

Keeping your chain clean and lubricated

Keeping your chain clean and well lubricated is essential during winter. A wet lubricant is recommended because it’s thicker and stays on the chain longer. However, it does attract dirt and grime more easily, meaning you’ll need to check and maintain your chain more frequently.

Preventing rust and corrosion

Living in Atlantic Canada, we’re exposed to high levels of salt and moisture during winter, making regular cleaning even more important. Preventing rust and keeping moving parts lubricated should be a priority. A simple soap and water solution works well for cleaning the frame and degreasers can help keep it cleaner for longer. Just be sure to avoid using degreasers on the frame, as they are meant for the chain or drivetrain only.

Choosing the right tires for winter riding

Finally, let’s discuss tire choices for winter. With fluctuating road conditions commonplace in winter, having good traction is essential. While studded tires are great for icy roads, they can actually lose grip and slide on bare asphalt. For the most versatility, a knobby set of mountain bike tires is a great option, providing solid traction across varying conditions.

By following these maintenance tips, you can keep your e-bike in great shape all winter long. Enjoy your rides and stay safe out there!
